Piedmont Park is an urban park located around one mile northeast of downtown Atlanta. The space has been in use for events since 1887, but only came under ownership of the city in 1904, then becoming a public park. In 1989, with the park experiencing a period of decline, a group of concerned citizens and civic leaders came together to form the Piedmont Park Conservancy - an organization which now works alongside the City of Atlanta to restore and preserve the beloved Park. To date, the Conservancy has raised over $23 million through corporate, foundation and individual sponsors. These days, Piedmont Park is without a doubt, the "premier green space and central gathering place of Atlanta."
And when you look at the list of facilities and activities available there, it's easy to see why Piedmont Park is so popular. Miles of paved paths provide the ideal distraction from the busy city life for walkers, joggers, bikers and skaters. Picnic shelters, tables and benches are situated throughout the park which also features two different playgrounds.
The Sharon E. Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park is another popular addition at the Atlanta attraction, boasting 12 lighted hard-courts and hosting an active schedule of leagues and lessons. There is also The Active Oval which is home to two softball fields, two soccer pitches, two beach volleyball courts and a dirt running path.
With such stellar facilities, it comes as no surprise that the Piedmont Park schedule is a busy one. The outdoor venue is the ideal setting for a wide variety of special events. Festivals including the Atlantic Pride and the Atlanta Jazz are regular additions to the schedule at Piedmont Park, as too are concerts, which are often played to raise money for the Conservancy. Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band and Sir Paul McCartney have all featured on the Piedmont Park schedule in the past.
